As we step into October, I want to pause and acknowledge the importance of this month in the mental health field. October is recognized as Depression and Mental Health Screening Month, as well as ADHD Awareness Month, Emotional Wellness Month, and Bullying Prevention Month. That’s a lot packed into 31 days—and for good reason.
Mental health struggles rarely exist in isolation. Depression can show up alongside ADHD. The pain of bullying can impact a person’s self-esteem well into adulthood. And emotional wellness—the foundation for how we move through the world—requires attention, care, and intention.
As a Black woman and Licensed Professional Counselor, I hold a special awareness of the ways mental health conversations have often been silenced in our communities. Many of us grew up hearing phrases like, “pray it away,” or “just be strong.” And while faith and resilience are powerful, they cannot take the place of professional support, compassionate listening, and the right tools to heal.
This month, I encourage you to ask yourself a simple question: When was the last time I checked in on my own mental health? Just like we go for annual physicals, mental health screenings are preventative care. They can help identify depression, anxiety, ADHD, or other concerns early on—before they spiral into larger challenges.
If you’ve been feeling persistently tired, disconnected, overwhelmed, or simply “not yourself,” please consider reaching out for support. A screening, a conversation with a therapist, or even confiding in someone you trust can be the first step toward relief.
October reminds us that emotional wellness is not optional—it’s essential. You deserve joy, peace, and the freedom to live fully as yourself.
Let this be the month you take a bold step toward that.
